known as "kagami biraki".

What is "Kagami Biraki"?

As a traditional Japanese practice, "Kagami biraki" marks many significant events, such as weddings, corporate anniversaries, and sports events, as well as the onset of the sake brewing season, which also occurs in early October around World Sake Day.

To open the sake cask lid, a wooden mallet is used. According to the number of guests, the casks are of varying sizes, with the largest holding 72 litres of sake. At the end of the ceremony, a host or VIP guest is announced who will lead the strike, and watching them "plan" the strike as the ceremony begins is a very enjoyable experience.

There are a lot of head nods, smiles, and anticipation for the moment, and on the third call of "Yoisho! ", the barrel is broken off, and the sake is distributed to every guest in masu (cubic sake cups made of Japanese wood) for a group kanpai to celebrate the good fortune being shared among the guests.
